Beste lezer,

Dear reader,
Chris James calls himself a student of sound.
‘We are all born with a beautiful voice’ is his motto, and he teaches gentleness and stillness. He teaches us to get energetically clear, to re-connect with ourselves, with our hearts.
He presents feelings with music instead of emotions. What's the difference? What is this Truth Chris talks about? What is truly getting to know yourself? Healing through sound…

Fernando Lameirinhas remembers the sound of the sizzle of the oxcarts and the organ of the church, the silence of the plowed fields and the feeling of the earth... his music embraces all these memories of sound and silence and he knows, in an intuitive and masterly way, to combine them with the experiences of many national and international musicians who have accompanied him during his 40 year career.

Geniet ervan!

God leeft in jou.

Sufismo no Gharb Al-Andalus
Frederico Mendes Paula

Respondeu-me _ Tu”

Provavelmente estará, mas o I-Ching ajudou-me, acho eu, a encontrá-lo.
The sound of silence in the city
Mo Haan

Paul Vens

Paul Vens - Wonderful Silence

An interview with Chris James

Dear readers,

I wasn’t able to reproduce my beautiful Skype conversation/interview with Chris James; my little old recorder produced too much noise. It became an impossible task!
My sincere apologies for what happened!

But actually, it’s not about me, it’s about to bring you in contact with Chris and his wonderful work! So I proposed to redirect you to his own site, to his last radio interview with Gayle Cue. It’s a wonderful interview and I know sure you are going to love it!
The interview starts with the song: ‘river’.

Hi Teresa

yes that’s a great idea

yes for this last month every hour is allocated, with a back log of things to do, so often there is only one chance at doing things

this last interview is a good one to send out to people

with Love

Chris

Walk with your heart

One curve reveals the other one. It's like a hand caressing. To make music is to carve the soul!

An interview with Fernando Lameirinhas

By Teresa Pinto
The birds fly between the trees in blossom in the Vondel park, chirping happily as if celebrating the warm days of Spring. While waiting for Fernando, I enjoy their lovely ‘songs’, the screams and laughter of the children on the swings and the ducks that parade quietly on the pond in front. A tableau of image and sound!
I see Fernando coming far away on his bike with that smile so typical of his.
We talk a little off the recorder, the mint tea is on the table and we make ourselves ready for the pleasant interview.

Actually, an interview that turned out to be such a beautiful(!) recollection of a life full of events, changes, traveling and turning points ... that I decided to make of it a kind of documentary on the life of this Portuguese musician, so cherished by the Dutch people.
Fernando you were born in Porto in 1944 and you lived in Viana do Castelo and in Trás-os-Montes. Tell us a little about your childhood, the memories, the sounds, the places ...
Yes, I was born in Porto, but I don’t remember anything of those first three years. I have vivid memories of the time I lived in Trás-os-Montes, in Vimioso. I am not very good at dates, I think I lived there from my third birthday till I was eight, nine years old. And those are the years that had more influence on my adult life. Those years and the period in Viana do Castelo.
I was a sensitive child, as a child I was already very sensitive. I was fearful, but at the same time I was cheeky.
I always felt very connected with the earth. My mother called me ‘barefoot’ because when I would come home from school the first thing I would do was to take off my shoes. I loved to walk barefoot, I like to feel the earth! That feeling is still there and it is reflected in my songs.
That period was a difficult period for the family; my father was a policeman but in his heart he was a kind of farmer. He loved the land and decided to have a farm. We had many animals such as cows, pigs, sheep, donkeys, horses ... It happens that my father was not a good manager and so we lived with difficulties. These difficulties weren’t a bad experience for me. As a child, connect with the earth as I was, I always loved that farm, so I just absorbed the positive side of this experience. For our parents it was an intense and sad period of course; always short of money, so many difficulties. It may seem a kind of paradox, but this was a merry period for me in many ways, I remember it with great tenderness. That period left strong marks in my life.
The sounds I remember from that time, from Vimioso… the sizzle of the ox-carts.
Later I composed a music about that sound. It's called: ‘A caminho’ / ‘on the way’.

The sensation of that noise, of time ... the time went so slowly. There was time to do so many things. The sound of this sizzle of the ox-carts came from faaaar away... (Fernando says this very slowly, and I taste the slowness of time in his words). The sound could be heard already half an hour before they pass our door. And the sound would be heard as a 'piiiiiii', and then it was a deafening squeal when it came closer and start again to fade as they went away. So for me that sound was associated with the sense of time which in turn was associated with the Summer. Summers were huge, three-month vacation from school ... I enjoyed riding on the rails of sowing wheat; sowing and harvest were made with ox-carts in that time. That was my carousel (laughs tenderly). I always fled to the fields and my parents had to go and fetch me. I would then be with the farmers, I enjoyed hanging around with them.

Another sound that I also transmitted to my music was the sound of the ‘farewell’ in the ‘50s. We lived near a bus stop where people came to catch a bus that took them to a city from where they would depart to Brazil. At that time there was much emigration to Brazil. Then around four o'clock in the morning, the family made a whimper: goodbye my brother, my son, my father ... I'll never see you again…
Some farewells were made with the saxophone. I heard it once or twice but it was enough to leave a very strong impression on me! Bad musicians, but a saxophone played in the middle of the night was a magical thing!
I have a neighbour here in Amsterdam that sometimes gets to play the sax at two in the morning (we laugh of the madness of this city) and that sound reminds me of this time.
That sound ... that sound of the sax in the silence of the night, without being accompanied by any other instruments, it’s real magic!
These are the things that I remember from my childhood in Vimioso. There are more events and sounds of course, but these are the strongest sensations.

Viana do Castelo is also a very strong period, where I lived from eight, nine years old to eleven years old. Viana do Castelo is a very beautiful city, for me one of the most beautiful cities of Portugal. Two new events took place there: one was the church choir where I started singing and the other was the discovery of the sea. There we saw the sea for the first time!
Among the sounds that marked me the most, I remember vividly the sound of the siren of the lighthouse. Hearing that for the first time… Viana do Castelo is a city like San Francisco, sometimes with fog you can’t see literally anything! So when there was fog, siren began to 'uuuuu' (Fernando mimics the sound). When I would hear that, it was awesome and mysterious. For a child who had a lot of imagination, as I had, the sound of the siren brought lots of images.
Then there was the sound of the church organ. When I heard the sound of this organ for the first time, mmm .. I was ... So, that was all I wanted: to go to the church, not to pray but to hear that impressive sound. The effect that sound has on the sensitivity of a person's soul is indescribable. That and the cathedral itself, the architecture, ... those are the things that really impressed me.

In a Dutch documentary that was made in Portugal about my life there (unfortunately not finished for some other reasons) we went five days into filming and one of the places we visited was that church. When we entered the church I heard an organ and I was deeply moved, tears rolled down my face ... and actually, I realized afterwards that it was not even the church organ I heard but a small electric organ. But the sound of it led me to this period of my childhood ...
After we visited the old 'hospital ship' from the old codfish fleet. There is also a beautiful story about it but I let it off the recorder otherwise the interview will be too long (smiles). But the sounds of these ships also stayed in my memory. Mysterious sounds!

Fernando we are talking about the sounds but I know that silence is also very important to you. How does your music relates to it?
Silence, always! This is one of the most prominent things. Most of the musicians know the value of it. Silence is the most important part of music, without it there is no music. A note can only be appreciated in the context of silence. The same way in life: that balance between being active and being passive, as if it were. I protect myself, I don’t listen much to other music. I always get influences from other musicians but I also want to write my own things, the ones that come from within.
Otherwise a certain moment one is only transmitting what got inside. There must be a balance in it.
In the car I never listen to music. Sometimes is Trees (Fernando's wife) who puts music on and I listen and I like it, but I never do it myself. I hear as little as possible, sometimes I go to concerts and enjoy a lot, but often I don’t go.
I love walking in silence for example. I really like that! I also like to talk but I also like people who can hear the silence without discomfort. The silence in which each one of us gets lost in his own thoughts, feeling well together. One thing I remember from my father, and I cherish that image, is that he loved to walk in the fields, without speaking. I also like that very much, I really like that silence. So as a child I would go with him, and I loved it.

Do you have memories of your life in Porto?
No, actually I don’t have many memories of that time. I lived there between my twelve and fifteen years of age. It wasn’t a very pleasant period, there were difficulties ... As Viana do Castelo was a better period for us, we met in Porto enough financial difficulties again. My father had been fired from the police, accused by a priest of having left winged political views...
I felt those difficulties then as well, since I was older. I worked on holidays so we could live a bit better, but still… And Porto was a busier city already ... no, not me.
So to go to Belgium was an adventure, a very positive adventure!

How was it?
Can you imagine, with almost sixteen years old, an adolescent, with sensitive soul ...
We were always very adventurous. Our mother told us later that this adventurous spirit was already there back many generations…

I think it’s a truly Portuguese quality, that sense of adventure ...
Yes, and it was very strong in our family. My mother moved twenty-six or twenty-seven times ...
So the trip to Belgium was an adventure. For me, with almost sixteen, already very aware of the world around me … To leave the situation in which we lived in Porto behind was a huge relief. The horizon opened up again. Emigrant, young, attracted to music ... in Belgium we had the opportunity to work and earn money for a better life. Until then I hadn’t got any money to buy an instrument.

What was your first instrument? The guitar?
No. First I enrolled in a music academy and started learning to play drums. But only the box; in that time you couldn’t start straight away with the drums. At home I would beat with the baguettes on the table or a stool. I think I did that for four months. Then I bought the box and only later the guitar.
That period of my life was marked by influences from abroad: the Shadows, then the Beatles...

What was the group that influenced you the most or attracted you the most at the time?
The Beatles, no doubt! They had a great influence on me; one of the biggest. They were very melodic.
But I stayed always very open, I never stayed under the influence of this or that group. And then they were so many … First you had the groups with electric guitar, instrumental groups: the Spotnik, the Shadows, the Rangers ... this period was a kind of introduction to the Popmusic, later they started to associate the lyrics.

After having formed some groups, always with your brother, António, you came up with Jesse & James ...
Yes, that was the period towards the end of the '60s. Between '60 and '61 we started with small groups: Robots, The Mods, … well, all these kind of ‘arti fact’ names (laughs). At that time we played, me and my brother, with two Sicilians. That period is already a beginning of our way of integrating several nationalities in the band. Our adventurous side again, seeking new horizons. Sometimes we would bring musicians from London.
Contacts are not planned, they happen! It’s our daily life that brings them up. There was never an agenda (we laugh because the word 'agenda' is part of the international lexicon, when we want to tease a bit the Dutch people). Those contacts are very enriching at all levels. They are a true school of life!

There were two sad events in Belgium, in the family: one was the death of your sister and the other the death of your father. How did they affect you at a personal and musical level?
They enriched my life.
When my sister died, I was still young, I was not yet sixteen. I was in the beginning of my life ... but those are the kind of things a person never forgets. It affected all of us in different ways; for my mother it was a wound that never healed. My scar has healed and enriched me. The same with the death of my father. At the time he died I was in a period of my life when I was a bit down. It enriched me in the sense that I started to value life, I became more aware of what I had and of my surroundings; the family, the friends and the contacts. I cannot say it affected my music directly. But it surely is part of it! That's what gave me the wood and the stone to carve.

You made a gesture of sculpting; you sculpt your music, you give it shape like a sculptor works on his piece. A lovely image.
I'm very attracted to that side of art, in music. To those forms that are sometimes very instant and sometimes more elaborate. The sculptor has a prime matter, the sculpture is not made at once. It is the vision of what one wants to do, always being corrected. A curve reveals the other one. It's like one hand caressing. And the music is this, it’s shaping it up. But always experiencing it. That's why I'm bad in the studio; there I lack the contact that awakens in me the feeling. The connection with the public brings me that. The studio is very dry to me, it doesn’t inspire me so much.

Fernando you came to Amsterdam, you were 31 years old, with António. What made you to leave Belgium?
I came with my brother, our mother came some time later. New contacts, our network became bigger and bigger.
We lived the Belgium cycle, we turned stars and then we had our decline. Decline that every creative artist feels if he is in contact with his art. What goes up must come down! Those are normal cycles. The success that seems a very attractive thing loses the appeal, a person gets tired. I started feeling a gap between what I became and what I was intimately. What attracts me in music is the soul and, at last, everything became a show business, there was no soul anymore.

What were you most attracted to in Holland?
The energy! The energy of the people, of the country. At the end of our Jesse & James period, Brussels was a very attractive and alive city, but started having to many drugs around, too much smoke, too much heroin ... and to see friends who never got out of this cycle ... The energy turned very negative. Here too there were drugs but that group was much more restricted, the energy in general was much more positive.
Here we started another period of our musical career. With a lot of positivism, it became another kind of development.

Brussels was the end of Jesse & James, what did start here in Amsterdam?
The development of identity. Before I used to sing in English and a certain moment I start asking myself: what am I? I'm not very good at hiding ... so then I started singing in Portuguese as well. I rediscovered the Portuguese language. The Brazilians were at the same stage of development of Pop; Veloso, Gilberto Gil ... they also inspired me. I started writing in Portuguese and started playing acoustic. Then we started to develop a samba-rock, fado-rock. Actually it was a musical soup. But it doesn’t matter, what matters is if the soup tastes good. I’m not very concerned with labels: samba, fado, soup ... I make soup! (I laugh because Fernando makes a wonderful musical soup but actually he also cooks wonderful soups!). When the soup is good, we eat and drink. Our musical tradition has always been a kind of weaving of experiences and musical genres. So we started a Latin samba-rock, multicultural. It was the period at Melkweg, Kosmos, Paradiso ... we were the house band of these centers. This was the period of 'Sail / Jóia’. It was very successful and it was a very beautiful period. Each period has its own energy, its heyday and its decline, the Spring and the Winter. So this was the first cycle of Amsterdam. It has much to do with going back to the roots. Roots more in the sense of the language because at a musical level ... when we left Portugal we were so young. There was not much innovation in music at that time in Portugal.
Then I also started to write more about my childhood and about the places cherished in my memory. We didn’t try to go back to that side entirely Portuguese, which we couldn’t anyhow; we had so many transformations on the way. One cannot be what one hasn’t lived and experienced!

Back then I gave a little touch in some of your lyrics in the album: ‘Meu fado’ / ’My fate'. We could notice indeed that you had had influences of many languages.
And still: I write in Portuguese, but the sentences are sometimes built from French or English. It is curious that I went back to the roots, to the Portuguese, through the Brazilian. I feel that the Portuguese of Brazil has developed a bit more free. On the other hand, the more I write in Portuguese, the more I begin to defend the more conservative forms of the language. Today I see some words in Portuguese-Brazilian, and I wonder: what is this? (Laughs). But back to the image of the sculpture, if a corner is a bit sharp, why not to round it a bit? I believe that is what the Brazilians did:-)

Fernando, your music has always been very intuitive and the fact that you always played with musicians of different nationalities, turned it into a kind of rainbow. And that sets it, as we talked a while ago, above any possible labels. I was always fascinated by this art of yours of incorporating all these influences in your music, but in such a way that it always turns into something of your own.
Well it has to do with the development, with the experience. There are sometimes elements that can be connected even though one doesn’t know yet for sure what will become of it. But there is a certain intuition and one learns to trust it. It has also to do with life experience, not with something you can study at school. And it has also to do with what we talked about earlier: the adventurous spirit. There is always a dose of risk. The unknown is always a very attractive side.

Your mother, a very strong woman, was a milestone in your life. You dedicated her a song: ‘ À janela’ / ‘At the window’, which I find such an extraordinary song, with such a deep feeling…
This song is a simple image, it’s a photography.
Yes our mother was a landmark, an anchor in our lives. The love of our father, about whom I also can talk with great affection, is much more abstract, there was little interaction. Our mother was always very close to us. A symbol of strength, no doubt, a true force of nature. The older I got the more I started to value that. When we are young we don’t really like so much strength around (he laughs). And then there is a whole story behind that only when we got to know it we started seeing really how much she had suffered… with her father and with her grandmother… and then we started appreciating her strengths even more. Yes, our mother is an example of strength and I ‘m very proud of her. A woman who was widowed when she was fifty-five years old ... beautiful, a beautiful woman! She had known only my father and she never wanted any other man after he died; she always managed alone, by herself, never wanted any help. She is now ninety-four years old and still very lucid.
When she started to get older she would spend more time at the window. And of course I had seen many times older people at the windows, but… one day, walking in the street I looked up to my mother and it touched me so deeply ... Then I wrote this song.

I'm very happy with this song, with this kind of tribute to my mother.
There are always things deeper than others. The work of an artist evolves around a gem; we seek that jewel and sometimes we find it by chance, and other times we have to work harder on it ... then we write a bit here and correct a bit there, till we get the gem. Sometimes one realizes that the (musical) work is reduced to a few pieces, or themes and the rest are attempts to find this core, this essence.

What are these gems in your career?
‘Um mundo sem fim’ / ‘A world without end’ and ‘À janela’ / ‘At the window’ ... there is more but it's not up to me to judge that.
For me these two are these jewels. What has nothing to do with the successes!

They can be intimate successes…
Yeah, exactly. Not necessarily for the public.. And sometimes it is both.

There was a period of Jacques Brel, a late period for you…
I did that work with Paul de Munnik. It was a journey that makes part of the influences in my music. Sometimes there is half hidden influences, the influences are not always visible. Sometimes they come in very dilute elements and you aren’t always aware of them. As a young man in Belgium I was exposed to the work of Jacques Brel, Ferrat ... I listened to them of course!
The melodic structure from 'à janela' is more in chanson, perhaps with a mix of Portuguese fado. (and Fernando sings a verse). And I didn’t fully realized that at the time. Then I became aware of certain influences, and of how much I value Jacques Brel. Much more now than in the period of Jesse & James. We made a totally different music at the time. Brel's music was more intellectual, it had an incredible rich text... but actually it was not only the text, the music was also incredible good! His influence was stronger than I thought and so I decided to make a program where I could express it, playing his songs but on my way. I am very happy to have done this work. It was not easy, it was quite difficult actually, I must be honest. But I'm glad to have made something that is part of the cycle of my life as a musician.

You made a composition, together with Stef Bos where you talk about the search of balance.
"I don’t live where I was born / I live always between a rock and a hard place / between the south and the north / I look for a balance ..."

Did you find that balance?
Those lyrics reflect our history. I composed the music and the text is from Stef. Stef Bos is a great writer. I depart from the music and then I adapt the lyrics to it, Stef works the other way around: he writes first the lyrics and only then the music.
We realized that we are in the same situation: we both live abroad. Stef is Dutch and lives in Belgium. I am also, somehow, always ‘between a rock and a hard place’ (tussen wal en schip). This duality is very much present in us and when we talked about it a song was born.

You have a lovely house in Portugal where you spend a great deal of your time… What is your relationship with Portugal?
love to spend a few weeks or even months in Portugal but I couldn’t live there. What would I do in Portugal? I live where I can be active in my career, where I can work and where they value me.

Portugal never hosted you, at the professional level. How come?
Well, and this should be said for the record: “Portugal is a better stepmother than a mother” as we say there.

Many reasons: my music is such a marriage of elements, and in Portugal only now they start playing a bit with it. Within some years this gap will disappear. I'm still a bit the black sheep among the flock.
People listen to me many times in a very analytical way and you can’t listen to music with an analytical attitude. We must be open to it, we like it or we don’t like it. When one starts to examine it, then one is no longer listening. In Portugal they analyze me a lot: my accent ... what is he? Cape Verdean, Brazilian, Angolan??? Then they go after a label to put on my music but my music is not this, not that... people cannot label it and they stop listening.
Before I would get a bit disappointed with this lack of openness. But then I reached a point of not caring anymore. It no longer matters to me. I do not want to impose on anyone, I don’t ask anybody anything or expect anything from anyone.
In general the Portuguese who like my music are more open minded, they go beyond the forms. Nowadays in Portugal we see this trends coming up. I found it curious that the young people there were also questioned about the form of fado. They made an album called: "The other side of fado." The fado early in the century was not accompanied by the guitar but by the piano ... and some editions also came out writing about the roots of fado in the slavery. So this questioning is healthy. And of course, fado is not the only musical genre that represents Portugal.

I hope Portugal will be more receptive to your music in a few years! It would be very nice to have a kind of ‘coming back home', it sounds fair to me that Portugal would recognize your value.
It used to be important to me, but really, not anymore. But it's nice to see the musical evolution and the musical questioning of this young generation.
For fifty years Portugal was actually quite isolated. But we have to agree that we also had at the time, a great tradition of music; when I listen to Amália Rodrigues… (Fernando makes gesture of shivering). What is good is good!
It is unfortunate that some youth who did not live that tradition is trying now to make as if they were the ambassadors of the genre. With the Jazz happens the same: there is a certain discrepancy ... many poets, then comes another one and puts some music to it ...

If I understand you right, you are referring to the lack of soul.
Yes a little! The soul ...!

Fernando, I remember a project in Belgium in 2000, with writer J. Rentes de Carvalho (another figure that is much more well known and appreciated here in Holland than in Portugal) where he would read poetry and you would make the musical arrangements. Do you still have this kind of projects?
From time to time, but not very often anymore. Funny that you mention that now. At this dinner with Rentes de Carvalho we had a wonderful conversation and then he sent us an email of gratitude, where he wrote a sonnet. The first sonnet he wrote, because he never writes poetry. A sonnet about us, my brother and I: 'The Borinage kids'. I was supposed to make a music for it but never found the form. A sonnet is a very complex structure that I cannot easily put into music. So I decided to use it now as an introduction to my new album. I have no contact with the Rentes de Carvalho for years, he lives now in Trás-os-Montes, and doesn’t come very often. He told me that he agreed that I would use the poem but I had to send it to him because he no longer remembered what he had written. As for the coffee he said: you have to come here to drink it in Trás-os-Montes. (laughs)

Your music career in Holland is full of meetings, both on stage and in the studio, with a range of highly regarded Dutch musicians: Paskal Jakobsen of Bløf, Paul de Leeuw, Trijntje Oosterhuis, Paul de Munnik … a very long list, quite long actually. A wonderful work that I will not mention here, now due to the length of this interview…
Tell us a little about your new album that will be released in September, with the title: “E terno” a wonderful title, where you play with the words: ‘eternal’ and ‘tender’.

I'm glad I found this title that conveys the content of the songs, which is actually a continuation of what I do for a long time. My songs are based on what I am, what I see, what I feel.
There is a part of my life that was affected by death and birth: the death of our elder brother one and a half years ago and the birth of my grandson a year ago. There are some songs that express this feeling of great loss, others who express the joy of this birth. It also portrays a little the fact that I am getting older, which is not to underestimate. All that is for me a life cycle: birth, growth, rejuvenate, grow old(er), to die: ‘the eternal of the tenderness, the tenderness of the eternal’.
The intertwined roots, the personal and musical development, parts of my childhood, having lived in several countries, the influences of different national and foreign musical styles, death, life, birth ... actually everything I am.
Paul has two duets with me in Dutch and Portuguese. Eric Vloeimans has also two themes that he plays beautifully, very beautiful! Regis Gizavo has two themes and then my team: my brother António and Juan Pablo who has accompanied me for twenty 20 years.

I am very curious and am looking forward to the launch of this new album!

Meanwhile the day had cooled a bit, we zipped up our coats, said goodbye and got on the bikes, each one his own way. The park was emptier now, the birds were still happily chirping, and I... I comforted myself with this great privilege of having friends.

Uma curva faz aparecer a outra. É como uma mão que acaricia. E a música é isso, é esculpir a alma!

Uma entrevista com Fernando Lameirinhas

Teresa Pinto

Eu protejo-me, escuto pouco.
No carro nunca escuto música.

Nao. Primeiro inscrevi-me numa academia de música e comecei a aprender a tocar bateria.

Enriqueceram a minha vida.
A minha curou e a cicatriz enriqueceu-me.

A energia!

Dantes cantávamos em inglês e a dado momento comecei a perguntar-me: o q é q eu sou?

Isso atrai-me!

Eu compus a música e o texto é do Stef.

Eu vivo no lugar onde posso estar activo na minha carreira, onde posso trabalhar, e onde me dão valor.

A nível professional Portugal nunca vos deu entrada.

A alma…!

* Er zijn koeien, koeien, mooie witte wollige koeien. Met krulletjes en nieuwsgierige ogen. Ze zijn gewoon blij, want ze staan met de hele familie in de wei. Een enorme stier met zijn vele vrouwtjes en kalfjes. Ook hij probeert met geluiden duidelijk te maken wat de bedoeling is. En op het moment dat één van de koeien afgevoerd wordt met een kar, zijn alle koeien de hele nacht aan het loeien. Hartverscheurend.
* Er zijn kerkuilen, ze zitten 's avonds op mijn muurtje. En vliegen zo stil, dat je gewoon schrikt van hun enorme vleugels als ze over het terras vliegen. Maar hun jongen blazen...dat klinkt alsof er iemand in ademnood is. In september is er wat anders aan de hand, dan krijsen de uilen als heksen.
* Er zijn ontelbare vogel soorten. In het prille voorjaar klinken er prachtige gezangen, daarna flinke twetter partijen, vanwege ruzies..(om de huisvesting?) En ten slotte klinkt er weken lang een doorlopen geschreeuw van de jongen om voedsel. Na twee uitgevlogen nesten, is de rust weer terug gekeerd en is het genieten van de vooral avond gezangen. De merel zingt liefelijk, waarna de zwartkop het nog eens heftig over doet. De buizerds in de verte geven kai geluiden en tenslotte is het de zwarte roodkraag die het laatste woord heeft. (al klinkt hij als een typmachine). Elke avond is er een vergadering van de kraaien, die zich verzamelen bij de grote lindeboom.
* Er zijn mensen.

Sound & Silence
John Schwab
‘Sound is at least 50% of the experience’. Anyone who has a home theatre knows that when it comes to enjoying movies to their full immersive potential, just how true that statement is. To experience a movie the way it was intended by the film makers it is essential to have a surround sound system. The best sound systems not only give you the big sounds in a big way but also reproduce the silences and softest sounds with absolute clarity. Effects heavy films are especially good for taking advantage of the new home theatre technology to give one the closest experience that matches the cinematic. But there is also another type of movie that showcases the potential of the home theatre system even more beautifully.

Non-verbal visual documentaries are filmed in the most exotic and sometimes isolated locations around the world and accompanied by only an eclectic soundtrack of music and natural sound. With no story or dialogue, the awe-inspiring images take on a profound and heightened sense of wonder, while at the same time showing our destructive impact on the planet.

These films are a small niche sub-genre within the documentary genre made by only a hand full of very dedicated, independent film makers. People you have probably never heard of but sound vaguely familiar, people who have, with their visions, influenced many conventional filmmakers and television commercials. These people want to make you think about what you’re watching and you can see something new with every viewing. These films are timelier now than ever and have lost none of their significance.

People who watch these movies rarely see them only once. The timelessness, pure beauty and thought provoking nature of these movies makes people want to see them over and over again. There are people who have reportedly watched these films 50 or 60 times if not in the hundreds. I consider them must viewing at least once every year.

Godfrey Reggio, Philip Glass, Ron Fricke, Alton Walpole, Mark Magidson, and Lawrence Taub are just some of the people involved in the production of these amazing films.

If you love beautiful cinematography of exotic locations put together in thought provoking ways and accompanied by a broad array of eclectic music, you will love this non-verbal, visual form of Total Cinema, where sound and image is everything. Don’t miss these amazing films:
Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance 1983 Godfrey Reggio
Powaqqatsi: Life in Transformation 1988 Godfrey Reggio
Naqoyqatsi: Life as War 2002 Godfrey Reggio
Anima Mundi 1992 Godfrey Reggio
Chronos 1985 Ron Fricke
Baraka 1993 Ron Fricke

These movies are more silence than sound but are wonderful meditations on life.

Into Great Silence is a documentary without narration or a soundtrack and has long scenes of stillness so it can be challenging to watch for the modern audience who is used to a faster paced action packed movie. But this documentary has its rewards for the patient and curious as it reveals the daily life of monks living in what must be one of the, if not the most, isolated monasteries in the world. Nestled high in the French Alps, the Grande Chartreuse monastery of the Carthusian Order - founded by St. Bruno of Cologne in 1084, is completely restricted to outsiders and has some of the most stunning picturesque scenery. Its monks are totally dedicated to the service of God and practice permanent silence. Only after years of persistent requests was the German director Philip Groning finally given permission to film inside the monastery. What is revealed is quite amazing as monks in complete silence go about their daily routines of worship and we are shown a world untouched by technology and stunning beauty. Babies is another excellent documentary with very little dialogue and no soundtrack as it follows four babies from four different parts of the world (Kenya, Mongolia, Japan and USA) from birth until they are one year old. This interesting experiment reveals how different cultures treat and raise their infants and the impact that our environment has on us as we learn to take our first steps. I like this movie because of the interesting differences in cultures and environments, and the different personalities of the babies themselves.
